Analyzing Instagram DMs: what you need

Crush Analyzer reads chat export files. For Instagram, that means the data file you can request from Instagram, not a screenshot. The site accepts .txt, .json, .csv and .zip files, and screenshots are not supported.

Instagram's own export tends to contain your messages in a structured format, which is useful here, because it includes who sent each message and when.

How to get your Instagram messages

In general terms: open your Instagram account settings, find the option to download your information, and choose to include your messages. Instagram prepares the file and tells you when it is ready, which can take some time. Then download it to your device and unzip it.

Inside the download, open the messages folder, find the folder named after your crush, and upload the .json message file from it (not the whole download).

The exact menu names and options change from time to time, so follow Instagram's current screens. You can also watch the short export video in the guide on our home page. Choose JSON as the format if Instagram asks, and skip photos and videos.

What DMs reveal that a quiz cannot

Instagram chats mix text, reactions, replies to stories and shared posts. The analysis focuses on the written messages, so it works best when you two actually talk in the thread rather than only trading memes.

If most of your contact is reactions, the written signals will be thin. That in itself is information: a conversation that stays at the emoji level is a different thing from one with questions and plans.

Keep it in proportion

People use Instagram very differently. For some, DMs are the main way to talk. For others, it is a place to send reels with no words attached. Do not judge someone by one platform alone.

The result is an AI read for fun and reflection. It can show patterns in your DMs but cannot confirm how your crush feels.

Crush Analyzer gives an AI read of your chat, made for fun and reflection. It is not a guarantee of how anyone feels, and it cannot read minds. Use it as one more point of view, not as a verdict. See also our Privacy Policy.
