What counts as a double text
A double text is sending a second message before the other person has answered your first one. Replying to them is never a double text: if they wrote last, it is simply your turn.
What matters is not the count but the gap and the content: how long you waited compared with how fast they normally reply, and whether the new message adds something or only repeats the ask.
When a double text is fine
- You have waited clearly longer than they usually take to reply, about twice as long or more.
- Your first message was a statement or a reaction, so nothing is waiting on an answer.
- The new message is light and stands alone: a new topic, a callback or a simple plan.
- It is only one extra message.
When to stop
Stop at one extra message. If two or three of yours are still unanswered, more messages add pressure, not information. Put the phone down, do something else and let them make the next move.
Do not send anything meant to make them jealous, guilty or anxious. It tends to backfire, and it is not a kind way to treat someone you like.
What real chats show about silences and reply times
- In 167 real chats uploaded to CrushAnalyzer (chats with timestamps that ran 30+ days), 80% had a quiet stretch of 7 days or more at some point, and the chat carried on afterwards. The median longest silence was 26 days.
- In 230 real chats, the median reply took 20 min for the person being texted and 17.7 min for the person who uploaded the chat (replies within 24 hours).
Anonymised, aggregated numbers. They describe how people text, not what a silence means in your case. More on the texting statistics page.
Questions
Is double texting desperate?+
Not by itself. One extra, relaxed message is normal between people who like each other. It starts to feel pushy when it repeats the same ask, shows annoyance, or keeps coming with no answer in between.
How long should I wait before double texting?+
A useful rule of thumb is to wait at least as long as they usually take to reply, and about twice that if you want to be sure. If they normally answer within minutes, a few hours is plenty. If they answer the next day, give it a day or two. The calculator above adjusts this to their pace.
What should I send as a double text?+
Something easy to answer that does not mention the silence: a new topic, a callback to something you both found funny, or a simple plan. Skip "hello??", guilt trips and anything meant to make them jealous or anxious.
What is triple texting, and is it a bad idea?+
Triple texting means sending a third message in a row without an answer. After two unanswered messages another one rarely helps, because it adds pressure and nothing new. Pausing and letting them come to you is usually the better move.
What if they leave me on read?+
Read receipts only show that a message was opened, not why there was no answer. People get busy, forget to reply or are unsure what to say. If it happens once, wait. If it becomes a pattern across weeks, that pattern tells you more than any single message.
Does this work on WhatsApp, Instagram and iMessage?+
Yes. The questions are about timing and effort, not the app, so the same logic applies to WhatsApp, Instagram, iMessage, Snapchat and plain SMS. Reply habits differ a bit between apps, which is why we ask how fast this person usually replies.
Is my information private?+
Yes. The calculator runs entirely in your browser. Your answers are not sent to a server, stored or shared, and reloading the page clears them.
